Ensuring no errors in the Transportation Management System (TMS)

Trinity Logistics heavily relies on its Trinity Transportation Management System (TMS), a logistics platform, to ensure the timely delivery of freight. The TMS is the core of Trinity Logistics’ business for its internal users and has customer facing tools within it.

“We have internal users and customers that use our in-house Transportation Management System (TMS) system and CRM that we’ve created. And it’s very important that it is always functioning properly so our business and their business can be running smoothly,” says Cecilia Chavira Cole, a Product Analyst at Trinity Logistics where she manages application support and the automated testing suite during deployments.

Cole and her team have been on a test automation journey for the last three years. The goal is to improve their end-users’ experience with Trinity Logistics. They need to be able to test the TMS UI to ensure there are no bugs before they push new features to their customers.

Cole has been using Tricentis Testim since she began working at Trinity about three years ago.

“If the UI had an error or bug, it would not be a good look on our end. Testim helps us wrangle all those bugs together before we push it out so that we have a flawless finish at the end,” says Cole.

Less manual, more automation

As Trinity Logistics is building up its QA team, being able to have Testim automated QA integrated with its pipelines has helped to manage testing with less resources. Prior to Testim, Trinity was relying on manual testing which was tedious and time consuming.

“Using Tricentis automation tools for testing is a game changer,” says Cole. “We’re able to catch anything beforehand and very quickly versus manually testing something that would probably take ages.”

Trinity Logistics relies on the Testim Smart Locators feature whenever it changes its UI. The tool can find the problem and make an auto update, so Trinity’s tests don’t fail.

The Testim A.I. Smart Locators make it really great whenever we update our UI,” says Cole. “It updates our test for us so we don’t have to manually update every test. It just does it on its own and saves us multiple hours.”

Cole estimates that Trinity Logistics has approximately 50 plus tests living in Testim and says, “Having 50 plus tests to update during our bi-weekly release would take forever so utilizing the smart AI locators is very helpful. It makes for a seamless code deployment and it’s a great tool.”

Trinity Logistics has a lot of tests that are highly customized for its specialized TMS system and Testim’s low-code functionality makes it easy to allow for customization.

“With Testim, we’re able to customize some of the more advanced steps and integrate that with our testing to get really finite testing that we need,” says Cole.

Testim reduces the amount of bugs

Cole is certified in Testim and used the Tricentis education platform to get her certification.

“I certainly feel that the Testim automation is great for someone like me without an engineering background. I was using the tool before I even got the certification, and it was very user friendly,” says Cole. “It’s helped me become an automation testing expert. And as far as how it affects our team as a whole, it frees up those developers from having to dive in and figure out where a bug might be and with the help of Testim it makes it super easy.”

Testim has helped increase feedback and the relationship between developers and QA and Cole says, “Instead of just telling a developer that I found an issue, I can now visually replicate it and send the link to the test.”

The outcomes of using Testim has saved the Trinity Logistics service desk from being bombarded with a bunch of tickets if something is not working.

“Our bugs have probably fallen about 30% since we started building out Testim over the last year and a half, which is great,” says Cole. “At Trinity we have a culture of continuous improvement. We’ve implemented Testim as a solution to help us with bottlenecks along the way.”
