Companies that stand still in today’s ever-evolving, fast-paced business landscape are at significant risk of losing competitive advantage. Increasingly, high-quality software is playing a vital role in ensuring that organizations are able to innovate, pivot, and adapt to suit the growing demands of their customer base.

However, application testing challenges have significantly hindered the pace at which software can be delivered for too long. This long-standing bottleneck has hampered the DevOps pipeline, with inefficiencies in testing one of the biggest barriers to speeding up software release cycles.

The impact of SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis

IDC recently interviewed multiple IT managers and decision-makers to understand how their organizations leverage SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis and the impacts of this at both a quantitative and qualitative level. The goal was to understand the effect of these solutions on application quality, testing capabilities, and the overall business and operational impact.

Based on the feedback from these interviews, IDC concluded that organizations using SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis will:

  • Realize benefits worth an average of $5.33 million per year
  • Achieve an average three-year ROI of 576%
  • Require an average of 51% less time to complete testing cycles
  • Deliver application functionality to users 1.6 weeks earlier on average

We anticipate organizations will achieve these benefits by enhancing their potential to:

  • Increase testing team capabilities – automating the testing process, making testing more continuous, and the application of dynamic risk analysis to ensure proper testing scope.
  • Improve testing quality – resulting in higher-quality applications and fewer defects making it into production environments.
  • Facilitate more agile development activities – reducing time to market for new applications and features and increasing the bandwidth of DevOps teams.
  • Deliver better business outcomes – achieving higher-quality customer-facing applications and services, helping organizations win new clients and better retain existing customers.

Why choose SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis?

Interviewees were asked why they chose SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis. The main factors stated were that their previous testing solutions and processes were:

  • Inefficient and unable to keep pace with their business needs,
  • Limited in terms of the volume of tests they could cope with and the time taken per test cycle,
  • Not comprehensive enough to cover their testing requirements,
  • Unable to sufficiently minimize the impact of defects making it into the production environment.

Participants further stated that SAP Application Testing solutions by Tricentis enabled them to address the above thanks to the capability for high-quality testing at scale and speed with significant levels of automation, the latter in particular being a major challenge historically.

Lack of automation hindering developers

Research conducted in June 2024 via IDC’s Practices, Tooling and Perceptions Survey revealed that a lack of automation is one of the main factors preventing developers from being able to do the work they need to. At a time when the demand for testers and software developers is outpacing the size of the existing talent pool, automation provides a valuable alternative by enhancing testing quality and efficiency.

Further IDC research highlights that an effective software strategy reinforced with automation is vital to help overcome the challenges enterprises face in software delivery and scaling efficiencies. However, despite this the average organization has automated less than half (44%) of its applications based on IDC’s findings.

The increasing role of generative AI in software quality

Developers have not escaped the rapid adoption of generative AI (GenAI) across multiple industries, with many utilizing it to aid day-to-day tasks. Indeed, developers have identified software quality and testing as the biggest area where GenAI will benefit development processes over the next year and a half.

This presents opportunities and challenges within software development, with further investment in test automation anticipated as a result. However, IDC’s research suggests that considerable revision is still required for most machine-generated code. This means the demand for test automation to ensure code quality will only increase as organizations increasingly adopt GenAI within their software development processes.

Improving application quality and increasing business agility

The growing demand for accelerating software deployment cycles and integrating an increasing number of applications is driving the need for modern, scalable and efficient testing solutions. Organizations increasingly face a choice between balancing costs and recognizing the benefits of software quality and testing to prevent downtime, defects, bad code quality and poor performance, all of which can lead to much more significant business costs if left unchecked.

The elimination of manual testing and embracing of automation is ensuring businesses achieve digital success by improving application quality, saving time and money, and enhancing their overall agility. As more and more organizations shift their focus to software quality automation and continuous, agile testing, they will be setting themselves up better to negotiate the challenges of today’s digital landscape and ensure they’re ready to embrace innovation in 2025 and beyond.
